There’s a reason Google Maps can’t calculate how long you’ll spend at a Kolkata tea stall. The city runs on a different clock and that clock is called adda.
First, what even is adda?
Not gossip. Not a meeting. Not networking (Kolkata would be offended).
Adda is the ancient Bengali art of sitting down with zero agenda and talking about everything Maradona vs Messi, Marx vs the market, whether the fish at Gariahat was fresher last week. It’s a conversation with no destination, and that’s exactly the point.

The unwritten rules of adda
- Never check your watch. It’s considered violence.
- Everyone’s an expert. The man who’s never left Shyambazar will explain American foreign policy and honestly? He’ll make good points.
- Disagreement is the fuel. An adda where everyone agrees is just… a queue.
- Cha keeps coming. The conversation ends when the tea stall shuts. The tea stall never shuts.
Why it never ends
Because adda isn’t about reaching a conclusion it’s about the company. In a world of 30-second reels and “quick syncs,” Kolkata still believes the best things in life are long, loud, and slightly off-topic.
Pro tip: Say “achha, ekta kotha bolo toh” (okay, tell me one thing) at any adda and watch the session extend by 45 minutes minimum.
